Update: What _ mean by ‘art’ is otherwise known as ‘higher art.’

_ am an amateur artist. _ have something to say about art in video games.

Video games are generally regarded as a medium that provides joy, entertainment; people play for fun. Fun is something people seek when they look for a video game.

People do not seek fun when looking for art. They seek some kind of a message from the artist, beauty, they seek something that will empower their lives, something that will make them understand the world they live in better.

If there is any art is video games, it is in the cutscenes, the scenario or the visual appearance or sound of game elements. It is not the game itself.

For a video game to become art, the gameplay, controls and what you do as the player would have to incite feeling other than simple joy and fun. _ cannot think of any such mechanics. The player itself is the biggest obstacle. The gameplay, the mechanics, the rules would have to influence the way the player thinks about what they are doing.

_ think the rules make art impossible. It is what bounds the player’s actions. It is what constrains the possible scope of influence. Art do not have such bounds, such constraints. It does not impose anything on the audience. You are free to interpret art as you see fit. But if these constrains are removed from a game, it is not a game anymore.
